The opportunity
Our contract requested the design, fabrication and erection of plant rooms over the four separate roofs of the main hospital building at 5th floor level in the form of butterfly wings, as well as the construction of the administration block.
The operation
The roof structures were extremely complex to draw and erect. It was also vital that each section was fabricated to the highest possible accuracy and erected to the closest of tolerances. It was only with this high level of attention that the unique shape could be achieved. We erected 520 tonnes of steel comprising of 6,400 pieces using the site's five tower cranes. The overall site duration was 21 weeks. We completed the contract and handed over the building in a total of nine phases allowing following trades access for their works.
The result
After over eight years of planning, design and construction, this state of the art building was delivered on time and to cost. More importantly, the inspiring design will provide 939 beds for Barking, Hovering and Redbridge NHS trusts.
