The opportunity
We provided and installed 60m airtight exchanger structures for cryogenic air separation processes to enable the production of high purity gas for local steel mills at various sites.
The operation
Starting in Sweden, we worked closely with the B.O.C to modularise the structure to create a method of erection that enabled shorter programmes, reduced costs and produced a safer erection method by limiting the amount of work at height.
Initially, the structures were erected as bare steel frames. Later we built modules clad with 6mm steel plates (needed to make the completed building air-tight), which again reduced costs and the on-site programme.
The result
The project is a triumph of collaboration. Our relationship with B.O.C. was such that we even postponed erection at scheduled points to allow the pressure vessels to be craned in. Once positioned, we continued lowering boxed modules to complete the building. Due to the expense of the equipment, each section had to be positioned with the greatest of care and fixed to the tightest of tolerances.
