New Win: Southampton Parkway

We've specifically designed the frame so that the minimum quantity of steel is required. To do this we've used 16m long precast planks that also act as structural ties; thus omitting the need for additional steel members that become redundant upon completion.

The vehicle barriers use the BourneBarrier system of rods complete with mesh paneling to act as both vehicle barriers and pedestrian edge protection, which removes the need for two separate systems.

Once complete the new car park will provide an addition 375 car parking spaces.

The judges commented - ''The Wind Turbine Enclosure makes a crucial contribution to sustainable energy generation, integrated into a building fabric.

Overcoming severe technical challenges of the complex geometry, working at height adjacent to a main rail line and the stringent vibration and deflection criteria, could all be met only by high quality steelwork.''

New Partnership to Target the Energy Sector

By combining the skills of our two firms we will bring together substantial building design capability and a breadth of fabrication and supply chain expertise comparable with any of the other steelwork contractors in the UK market.

This new JV - to be known as BSMB - will primarily seek work in the energy sector. Nuclear power stations are expected to be a source of considerable business in the future and this arrangement represents an exciting opportunity for the Group.

Dale Barnard to Chair BCSA Sustainability Committee

We're delighted Dale has joined forces with the BCSA to research and develop initiatives on key sustainability issues to ensure the industry continues to deliver steel structures that are consistent with the Government's vision for sustainable construction.

The BCSA recognises that sustainability is a much wider topic than just the environment and includes issues associated with the health, safety and training of people as well as the commercial interests of companies.

In keeping with our environmental commitment we have appointed an internal green committee which is developing strategies for responsible resourcing, calculating our carbon footprint and assessing our existing systems against the standards of BES 6001. We are also working with Bovis Lend Lease to research new carbon reduction initiatives.

Award Winning Health & Safety Performances

The most recent acknowledgement is from Costain and Von Roll for Scott Goodman's outstanding contribution to health, safety and the environment on our Riverside Resource Recovery Facility Site.

In addition, we are also delighted to advise that our erection team for Skanska's most recent Ministry of Defence contract also received a similar accolade following the successful completion of the design and erection of over 1,000 tonnes of structural steelwork and metal decking to form a total of 8 buildings.

In keeping with our commitment to deliver safety training through a behavioral approach we have set up a new initiative where site operatives are encouraged to nominate individuals who consistently maintain high standards of conduct and performance. In recognition of positive attitude towards health, safety and the environment each month a winner will be picked and issued with an award.

The steel enclosure for the turbines is a unique and complex structure. The Strata's roof essentially cuts off the building at an angle, resulting in a geometric shape. The sloping roof formed by a pair of concave surfaces and a pair of convex off-set surfaces, meant that each of the circular openings for the turbines are three dimensional with elevated elliptical rings in differing planes to each other.

Final awards will be announced at an evening reception on Thursday 8th July 2010.

Bourne Steel
