2009 Tekla UK Model Award - Castle House

We're pleased to advise that we have been announced winners of the 2009 Tekla UK Model Award (buildings under 150 tonnes) for our model of Castle House.

Castle House is the first major scheme to come forward as part of the Elephant and Castle regeneration masterplan. The building is crowned with three 9-metre diameter wind turbines within an elliptical steel frame. The frame was designed to compliment the top of the buildings shape and also support the cladding in-line with the main building. It has three circular openings, which are parallel to each other.

Due to the main building having curved and sloping faces, each of the circular openings for the wind turbines had to be elliptical in differing planes to each other. They were formed from a total of 30 curved hollow section segments, all of which were set out in the fabrication shop using electronic survey data to ensure accurate positioning. The data was provided by transferring the information from the C.A.D package to the survey team to enable 3 dimensional setting out to be achieved.

The project was trial erected on a temporary site at ground level to ensure accurate fit and to allow the frame to be reviewed by following trades to gain a clear understanding of the structure before being dismantled and erected at its roof top location.
