09-Jan-2017: Bourne Steel secures Highpoint

Bourne Steel have been chosen to fabricate and erect a 100 tonne crown structure on top of a 45 storey skyscraper in the heart of Elephant and Castle.

Located on Newington Butts, the 140-metre-high tower named Highpoint is being delivered by main contractor Mace and will create a total of 278 private rental apartments and 179 low cost homes, making it one of the largest developments built specifically for the Private Rental Sector (PRS) in London.

The crown feature will give the impression, it is supporting each of the four corner balconies, but structurally it will provide the necessary dampening effects to stop the balconies vibrating.

Although the crown has only twenty-four main structural components the build sequence will be extremely challenging to erect at such a height. Therefore, it is essential all the components fit perfectly before they are lifted into position. To ensure this happens, a trial assembly will be carried out on the ground where it will be checked for fit and tolerance. It will also enable the erection team to gain full knowledge of how the structure will act in real time.

Highpoint is scheduled for completion in 2018.
